Keeping Our History Alive for Generations to Come

The African American Historical & Genealogical Society of Surry County (AAHGS-Surry NC) is dedicated to researching, documenting, and sharing African American history and family genealogy throughout Surry County and the surrounding region.

Through education, cultural heritage, community engagement, and access to historical resources, we work to keep these stories accessible, meaningful, and connected to our shared local and American history for generations to come.

A Legacy Worth Preserving

Historic Jones School

J.J. Jones High School was a cornerstone of African American education and community life in Mount Airy. By preserving and sharing its history, AAHGS-Surry NC honors the students, educators, families, and community members who shaped its legacy.

Today, that story continues through the vision for the Historic Jones Cultural Heritage Center — a community-centered resource for history, genealogy, education, cultural heritage, and engagement.



The school was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2021 and is recognized for its significance in African American heritage and education.
